A Port Coquitlam elementary school has been added to School District 43’s list of COVID-19 exposures, marking the 23rd school in the district to be touched by the virus.

Fraser Health has flagged Westwood elementary (3610 Hastings Street) for exposures on Oct. 19, 20, 21, 22 and 26.

There are now nine active investigations into COVID-19 exposures across SD 43 schools, including Mundy Road elementary and Kwayhquitlum middle schools, which are under investigation for a second set of exposures.

“An exposure is defined as a single person with a lab-confirmed COVID-19 infection who attended school during their infectious period. Exposure dates listed for a school exposure on our website may include one case or more, depending on the situation,” a Fraser Health spokesperson explained in an email to the Tri-City News earlier this week.

A school “cluster,” on the other hand, indicates possible school-based transmission with two or more lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 attending school while infectious.

An “outbreak” at a school means “multiple individuals with lab-confirmed COVID-19 infection” and that “transmission is likely widespread.”
