Damon William Campbell, a 45-year-old Port Coquitlam man, has been identified as the person who died Jan. 20 following an altercation in a Whistler hotel room.

Whistler RCMP officers were called to the Aava Hotel at about 3 a.m. for a complaint about a man and, upon arrival, found him unresponsive and in medical distress. According to the Independent Investigations Office (IIO), police initiated CPR but the man later died in hospital.

Integrated Homicide Investigation Team spokesperson Sgt. Stephanie Ashton confirmed at the time that a person had died as a result of a fight that broke out inside the hotel.

IHIT has not provided information on whether there is a suspect in the incident.

IIO investigators were called in to investigate because police officers were with the man while he was in medical distress.

"We continue to be involved in the investigation into the officer's actions on the death in Whistler," said IIO spokesperson Kellie Kilpatrick. Investigators are still working to establish whether there was a relationship between the death and the officer's actions - if so the IIO would conduct an investigation.

Kilpatrick said investigators have completed a number of interviews and looked at evidence that has been made available to them so far but it will likely be another couple of weeks before they are able to make a recommendation to the chief civilian director of the IIO.
