The city of Port Coquitlam is getting behind an initiative to promote energy conservation and cut greenhouse gases with a challenge to businesses and residents to participate in Earth Hour.
This is the sixth year the city has joined the global climate-change initiative, launched in 2007 by the World Wildlife Federation and the city of Sydney, Australia. And PoCo's Mayor Greg Moore hopes more people will turn off all non-essential lights and power sources for one hour - from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 23 - as part of Earth Hour.
Last year, fewer people took part than in 2011 but Moore hopes to reverse that trend and that people will take the opportunity to think about ways they can reduce their energy consumption all year long.
Social media and posters posted at city facilities will promote Earth Hour and citizens can sign up at www.earthhourcanada.org to help earn recognition for Port Coquitlam.
PoCo will also be turning off non-essential lights and power on Saturday.
