Nearly $10,000 has been raised to support victims of Typhoon Haiyan through the Red Cross but a Port Coquitlam teacher would like to see even more cash for the fundraising effort from local citizens.
"I'm hoping more businesses get involved," said Kiren Chand, whose students have been canvassing the city in pink t-shirts, have bagged groceries to raise funds and raised more than $2,000 online for their Toonies for Typhoon campaign.
This week, Canadian Tire in PoCo gave the students a boost with a $500 cheque and Chand would like to see more of the same from other individuals and corporations.
"That's what we really want to focus on, if one of the bigger companies, would say, 'We'll match what the kids get.'"
So far, $9,297.30 has been raised online and from local businesses and residents, which the federal government will match. The pledge drive is on until Dec. 23.
Pledges can still be made online at www.redcross.ca/pittrivermiddleschool and donations over $20 will get a tax receipt. As well, people can phone the school if they wish to make a cash or cheque donation at 604-942-0267.
