Michael Thomas, current school board chair, is seeking a third term as school trustee.

A Port Coquitlam trustee who has helmed the School District 43 (SD43) board of education this year is seeking another four-year term.

Michael Thomas announced he is a candidate in the Oct. 15 civic election, in which Port Coquitlam voters will be asked to select two trustees to be members of the board that governs school budgets and policy across the district's approximately 70 schools and 32,000 students.

"I am proud of my leadership on the board and our many accomplishments," said Thomas in his press release.

Thomas cited a "strong focus on students," navigating a pandemic, "spearheading" child care and mental health task forces, as well as completion of a five-year strategic plan among the board's achievements during his recent term.

Balanced budgets — as required by the School Act — is also cited as an important feat.

Prior to being elected as board chair in December 2021, Thomas held the position of vice-chair on the school board for three years.

He was first elected in 2014 and is the board's youngest trustee. He has also been the board's representative on the BC Public School Employers' Association for seven years.
