Riverside Rapids win big to open 4A girls high school basketball provincials

Senior Avery Sussex scored 34 points in the Riverside Rapids' 102-24 win over Mt. Baker in their opening round game at the AAAA senior girls high school basketball provincials, Wednesday at the Langley Events Centre.

The Riverside Rapids have started the defence of its B.C. AAAA girls high school basketball championship on the right foot.

The Port Coquitlam team defeated Mt. Baker 102-24 Wednesday, Feb. 28, at the Langley Events Centre.

The top seed of the 32-team tournament will play the Kelowna Owls in Thursday’s, Feb. 29, quarterfinal round at 1:45 p.m.

The Owls defeated Sir Winston Churchill 70-56 in its opening round game.

Senior point guard Avery Sussex scored 34 points to lead the Rapids. Jorja Hart, Isla Kelly and Rae Roycroft also scored in double digits.

Riverside led 27-2 at the end of the first quarter and 57-7 at halftime.

Dr. Charles Best defeated

In a later game Wednesday, the Dr. Charles Best Blue Devils lost 68-54 to the sixth-ranked G.W. Graham Grizzlies.

The Blue Devils, seeded 11th, were led by Jessica Parkinson, who scored 18 points while Denise Mendoza had 17,.
