A Port Coquitlam company continues to make a name for itself underwater with a recent contract with the Royal Canadian Navy.
International Submarine Engineering Ltd. is building two high-speed Aurora Towfish, which will be used by the navy for surveying and mine detection.
Company spokesperson Linda Mackay said the Aurora technology is unique to the nearly 40-year old company and has the capability of descending 200 m below the ocean's surface with sonar equipment attached to communicate data from the bottom of the sea. It's typically transported on the Dorado semi-submersible, also proprietary technology, but for the Canadian Navy's purposes, will be suspended from a ship.
The contract was awarded by MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates.
Mackay said the PoCo company has a long history in the city and continues to host schools and science co-op students. She said the Towfish and the Dorado platform vehicle are used all over the world for surveying, port security and mine detection.
