The Port Mann Bridge could be closed if the forecasted weather brings worse conditions for motorists.

In a news release this afternoon (Jan. 6), B.C's ministry of transportation and infrastructure (MOTI) says the 10-lane span that is a major conduit between Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley  "could be closed" if conditions "deteriorate."

Earlier Thursday the Alex Fraser Bridge was closed to traffic in both directions due to inclement conditions, including snow and ice. Crews are currently working to remove any and all build-ups.

"Ministry staff are closely monitoring conditions on the Port Mann Bridge," said MOTI in a statement, adding snow and ice that accumulate on the cable stays on both bridges is removed by special cable collars so chunks don't plummet on cars passing below, especially as temperatures or winds increase.

About 20 cm of snow fell on the Metro Vancouver and Tri-City regions overnight and into this morning, along with freezing rain that led to traffic delays and closures at local facilities.

Environment Canada is predicting at least 30 mm of additional rainfall along with steady 20 km/h winds. Those could incrase to 70 km/h by tomorrow.
