Gentlemen, start your Lycra.

Port Moody's bike lane network will be expanding with the addition of lanes from Ioco Road to the city's eastern limit, and on Murray Street to connect to the Shoreline Trail.

At Tuesday's meeting, city council authorized the contract award to Jack Cewe Ltd. in the amount of $371,000.

Plans for the bike lanes include a stretch along Guildford Way from Ioco Road past Ungless Way, where crews will need to build a retaining wall and slightly narrow the vehicle lanes to accommodate bicycles.

On the advice of TransLink, the project was expanded west to Electronic Avenue to provide better connections and increase the chances of winning grant funding.

Bike lanes on that stretch include a two-way bike path from Ioco Road, on the north side of Murray Street, to connect with the Shoreline Trail, as well as an eastbound lane on Murray to connect Electronic Avenue to Ioco.

Including the detailed design and tender, environmental monitoring, a possible CP Rail crossing and contingency, the total cost is estimated at $546,000.

The city has already earmarked $274,000 for the project and staff have secured matching TransLink grants, for a total budget of $548,000.
