The Port Moody Men's Shed Society is one of several organizations in the city that have received funding through its annual community grants program

Port Moody is nearly doubling its annual community grant program to give additional support to the city’s artists as well as heritage organizations.

In addition to $20,000 available for general community programs, the city is offering $5,000 for artist grants and another $10,000 for arts, culture and heritage groups.

Individual artists in the city can apply for up to $1,000 in one-time funding to help complete a project, prepare for an exhibition or develop promotional materials.

Port Moody arts, culture and heritage groups can receive up to $5,000 to support performances, projects and other initiatives that enhance culture in the city.

Other groups that help promote the well-being and quality of life of Port Moody residents can apply for up to $3,000 from the general fund.

Its recipients this year included (in no particular order):

  • Port Moody Men’s Shed
  • Volunteer Cancer Drivers Society
  • Burrard Inlet Marine Enhancement Society
  • SHARE Family and Community Services
  • POCOMO Meals on Wheels Society
  • Crossroads Hospice Society
  • Crisis Intervention and Suicide Prevention Centre of BC
  • Big Sister of BC Lower Mainland

The organizations used the money to support programming, pay for supplies, offset costs and to provide honorariums.

To be awarded a grant, applications will be reviewed by an advisory group before final decisions are made by council. Some of the criteria to be evaluated include:

  • availability of funds
  • extent to which a demonstrated need in the community will be addressed
  • degree to which the grant will help promote the well-being and quality of life for Port Moody residents
  • efforts the organization has made to obtain funding from other sources like corporate sponsorship
  • how much of the money will be spent in Port Moody
  • needs of the organization requesting funding
  • the organization’s support for equity, diversity, inclusion, reconciliation and accessibility initiatives
  • volunteer involvement

Applications for all three components of the community grant program are now open and must be submitted by Jan. 31, 2024.
