Port Moody city council unanimously voted on Tuesday to give $10,000 to help rebuild the Mossom Creek Hatchery after it was destroyed by fire last week.
Mayor Mike Clay told The Tri-City News last week that the money would help the organization maintain their work for the next few months, while plans for a new facility are being worked out.
"We want to help the hatchery get back on its feet and look forward to assisting in the planning to rebuild and maybe even enhance the operations, despite the devastation," he said in a press release after the council vote. "The outpouring of support in our community, from residents and businesses has been tremendous, and we encourage anyone interested to stay tuned in the coming weeks for opportunities to help."
Firefighters were called to the facility at around 7 p.m. on December 11, but icy conditions on the access road to the property made it impossible for their engines to get to the building.
Crews had to carry hoses the last 800 m to the site to pour water on the blaze.
More than 110,000 chum were lost by the fire and incubation trays containing 56,000 coho eggs were also destroyed.
