There's still more than three years until B.C.'s next municipal election, but Port Moody Mayor Meghan Lahti is already cultivating future potential challengers.
Really far in the future.
Lahti is giving one child in the city, between the ages of five and 12, the opportunity to take over her job for a day.
Not only will the winner get to wield the reins of civic power on Nov. 20 — which also happens to be World Children's Day — they'll also get a tour of city hall, learn about the role of the mayor and councillors, as well as enjoy a pizza lunch.
To be eligible to take their place in the mayor's office, applicants must submit a short essay — up to 250 words — explaining what they would do as Port Moody's top elected official for a day.
The winner will be selected by Lahti sometime in October.
Entry forms are available online or at Port Moody city hall (100 Newport Dr.) and must be submitted by 5 p.m. on Sept. 29.
Lahti was elected Port Moody's first female mayor last October, defeating fellow councillor Steve Milani.
She'd previously served on council from 1996 to 2011 and from 2014 to 2022.
