A 59-year-old Port Moody man has been charged with two counts of committing an indecent act in relation to an incident inside a vehicle on Lougheed Highway in Burnaby in May.

On May 12, Burnaby RCMP got a report that a driver was masturbating inside a vehicle while stopped at a red light on Lougheed Highway near Gaglardi Way, according to a police news release at the time.

His vehicle had been stopped beside a westbound 136 bus at around 3:55 p.m., and a teenager on the bus captured video of the suspect and turned it over to police.

After a three-month investigation led by Burnaby RCMP’s high risk offender unit, charges were laid against Patrick Joseph Paul Pelletier on Aug. 18, according to a police news release Friday.

“This type of behaviour is not acceptable in our community,” Burnaby RCMP Cpl. Andrew Coupe said in the release.  “Thanks to the assistance of several partner agencies, our investigators were able to identify a suspect and gather additional evidence to support criminal charges.”

Coupe, who is with the high risk offender unit, also thanked the witnesses who reported the incident.

Pelletier’s next court appearance is set for Sept. 14 in Vancouver provincial court.
