The fireworks display over Port Moody Inlet last Saturday for the city's 100th anniversary party was held back because of problems with the radio station that was simulcasting the music.
CKPM 98.7 FM, a PoMo-based station, was supposed to have timed the music at 9:30 p.m. for the pyrotechnics by Archangel Fireworks, which has produced shows for the Celebration of Light in Vancouver and Coquitlam's Canada Day festivities.
But yesterday, the city of Port Moody said the local radio station had "technical difficulties" that caused the fireworks to start 20 minutes late.
"But once the show started, 11,000 people in Rocky Point Park enjoyed a great display in the sky," said Dave Teixeira, a city spokesperson.
CKPM licence owner Matthew McBride said he was running the radio station that night and the computer froze and required a reboot.
McBride officially opened CKPM last November after a four-year process. In December, he told The Tri-City News, "I'm very happy it's on the air... it's the relief of having achieved a goal that has taken a very long time. We're open for business and looking forward to making friends with the community."
Earlier this month, morning broadcaster Dave Cannon and Laura Fraser, who ran the mid-day show, resigned from the radio station. On Tuesday, McBride denied there are any financial problems with the business. "We're in start-up stage," he said.
