Port Moody heritage advocate takes city to task over Ioco community hall

There are few advocates as staunch as Mary Anne Cooper when it comes to preserving Port Moody's heritage, and she's now turning her eye to the Ioco community hall.

She addressed council at the Oct. 28 meeting, saying the city was not holding up its end of the bargain to maintain the historic building and it's been left to deteriorate for the past 12 years.

Imperial Oil has taken care of the roof, Cooper added, but she said the interior is a "disaster," cataloguing a list of needed repairs: leaky pipes, faulty electricity, poor lighting and blocked exits.

"Ioco Community Hall is being lost and it has community value," she wrote in a letter to council. "It's one of the few remaining company towns in western Canada."

Council agreed to have staff investigate the matter and report back at the next meeting.

HOT STUFF

Chilled hockey parents will be happy to know that Port Moody will soon replace the broken bleacher heaters in Arena 1.

A city staff report presented to council noted the thermostat controller was broken and there was deterioration of three out of the five heater units. The heaters are activated by spectators through a timed push-button switch and each of the five bleacher heaters has its own switch.

Replacement of the heaters is just outside the five-year capital plan but with the cost of repairs near that of replacing them, staff recommended purchasing new heaters.

The $15,000 cost will be funded from the nearly $32,000 in savings from the Westhill pool tank repair project.
