Port Moody parade brings back memories

Everyone loves a parade, especially Port Moody Coun. Diana Dilworth, and this year, her dream of a string of floats winding its through the city will finally come true.

On Saturday beginning at 11 a.m., a parade featuring more than 80 entries, including marching bands, floats and antique fire trucks, will amble along Murray Street from Ioco Road to Rocky Point Park.

According to Dilworth, the parade marking the city's centennial will be a first in 40 years.

"We're one of the only ones that don't have a close-down-the-road community parade," she said.

But with parade entrants coming from as far away as Victoria and a dry, warm day predicted for Saturday, Dilworth is hoping to make up for that four-decade gap.

"The centennial gave us a great opportunity to put a parade together for the community," she said.

The grand marshals will be Al and Nellie Sholund, who are both Freedom of the City recipients, and the local Sea Cadet band will participate, as will the Vancouver Pipe Band.

Port Moody will even have its own float celebrating the city's art and parks.

"It gives everyone an opportunity to dress up and be silly. We are celebrating Port Moody's past, present and future," Dilworth said.
