Two drivers were caught by Port Moody policeracing each other at 118 km/h on St. Johns Street early Sunday morning. Both vehicles were impounded.

Commuters might see St. Johns Street in Port Moody as a parking lot, clogged with traffic and going nowhere at rush hours.

But two drivers thought otherwise early Sunday morning as they were clocked by a Port Moody Police Department officer racing each other at 118 km/h in the 3100-block of the busy thoroughfare where the posted speed limit is 50 km/h.

The derring-do under cover of darkness cost the drivers — their vehicles were impounded and they face charges under the Motor Vehicle Act.

“We all play a role in road safety,” said PMPD spokesperson Sam Zacharias in a news release.

The incident was one of several incidents of speeding, as well as impaired driving, encountered by Port Moody officers over the Easter long weekend, said Zacharias.

Two novice drivers had their vehicles impounded for excessive speeding on the Barnet Highway and an international driver also lost the use of their car for travelling way too fast on David Avenue.

“Slow down and give yourself enough time to get to your destination,” Zacharias said.
