Port Moody Police discovered a potentially smelly surprise when they were called to a report of an abandoned suitcase outside an apartment block at 2010 St. Johns St. on Sunday night.
When the officer opened the suitcase he found more than 100 pounds of various packaged, frozen meats.
Const. Luke van Winkel said they're not sure where the meat came from but they do occasionally get reports of food stolen from deep freezes in carports. He suggested a local homeless person may have rummaged through an outside freezer, gathered the meat into an old suitcase, strapped it on to a bicycle and rode off.
The meat may have fallen off the bike at some point or the person may have been startled and dropped it.
"In the long run it's probably best that they dropped it," he added. "Some of the beef had best-before dates of 2004 - the prime rib was well past its prime."
Police will be holding on to the meat in case somebody comes to claim it.
A Surrey man was arrested last week after allegedly using his 17-month-old son's stroller as a shoplifting tool in Port Moody.
On Jan. 11, PoMo Police were called to Shoppers Drug Mart on St. Johns Street, where they say two men had just stolen 17 bottles of perfume valued at over $900. One suspect evaded capture but the second was busted a few blocks away, near Moody middle school.
The 39-year-old Surrey man is known to police for property-related offences. He and his son were turned over to the Ministry of Children and Family Development and criminal charges are being sought.
Among the stolen property allegedly concealed in the stroller was a notebook, which police believe may belong to the other suspect. It contains the man's name, phone number, court information and what appears to be a "shopping list" of goods to steal, including specific colognes, perfumes, medications and a list of Shoppers Drug Mart and Safeway stores from Port Moody to Vancouver
The investigation into the second suspect is ongoing.
