Port Moody Police on the lookout for volunteers

The Port Moody Police Department is looking for a few good volunteers to join its victim services department.

Volunteers assist police officers during criminal investigations and provide support to people who are affected by serious motor vehicle incidents or a sudden death at home.

The program runs 24/7 to provide emotional support, resources and referrals to community agencies as well as information about the criminal justice system, said program co-ordinator Roselle Quinones.

"As volunteers you may be required to attend on scene and provide crisis information, support and follow-up care," she said. "We offer services to those who are impacted by crime or trauma.

Anyone who is keen to give back to the community is welcome to apply, Quinones said. The program's current volunteers come from a wide range of backgrounds and prior knowledge of the criminal justice system is not required.

It can be difficult work, however, and Quinones said PMPD is looking for individuals who can stay calm in a crisis situation.

"You need to be able to assess the needs of the clients and point them in the right directions and the appropriate resources that would assist them in their time of crisis or whatever they're encountering at that time," Quinones said.

Training is expected to begin in late February or early March. Anyone interested in applying is asked to pick up an application at the PoMo Police station (3051 St. Johns St.) or contact [email protected] for an emailed copy.

Applications are due by Jan. 15.
