Port Moody salmon hatchery shut due to COVID-19

The hatchery’s regular, experienced volunteers are still welcome unless they aren't feeling well or have any known risk factors for COVID-19

Here in the Tri-Cities, many families are figuring out what to do as regular indoor destinations like Science World are shut due to concerns around the transmission of the COVID-19 virus.

For many, the answer is simple: get outside and enjoy the sun.

Well, today, you can scratch another longtime Port Moody outdoor activity off your list as Mossom Creek Hatchery and Education Centre is now shut indefinitely to the public.

“At Mossom, we are proud to say that we are open to the public every Sunday, year round, but these are exceptional times,” wrote the hatchery’s president Kevin Ryan in a recent Facebook post.

Ryan noted that the hatchery’s regular, experienced volunteers are still welcome to help take care of the fish but that they should exercise caution “to protect your fellow Mossomites.”

“If you feel unwell or have any known Covid-19 risk factors, please stay home,” he wrote.

“Stay healthy.”
