Port Moody tackles sports display

Port Moody's top athletes will soon have a position of prominence in the community.

Port Moody's top athletes will soon have a position of prominence in the community.

Port Moody Council approved a recommendation from the city's parks and recreation commission Tuesday night that will see the creation of a sports memorabilia display at the recreation complex.

Council approved spending $12,000 to cover the cost of display units that would be situated in the main hallway between the registration desk and arena lobby as well as a $1,000 annual operating cost. The matter was referred to budget deliberations to determine a funding source.

Coun. Diana Dilworth, who chairs the parks and rec commission, said the mission statement for the display was "to feature local [Port Moody] sports talents as positive role models encouraging young people to get involved in sports, lead active and healthy lifestyles, and strive for excellence."

The plan calls for the induction nomination process to be integrated into the annual civic award nomination process for 2014. The commission suggested memorabilia could be rotated through the 20-foot-long display every year or two, with a wall plaque providing permanent recognition.
