Port Moody council will hold a special meeting on Tuesday night to decide whether $10,000 in contingency funds should be given to the Mossom Creek Hatchery, which was destroyed by fire earlier this week.
Mayor Mike Clay told The Tri-City News that the money could be used to help clear the site and allow the organizatoin to carry on with its work through the winter.
"We know it's not enough money to rebuild the hatchery, but it could bridge them for a little while," he said. "We can make sure that the limited operations of the hatchery can continue through the winter."
The city is also looking at the possibility of moving a trailer onto the property, which could work on a temproary basis until a new facility is constrcuted.
Clay said he is confident that the funds will be available to rebuild the Mossom Creek Hatchery Within 24 hours of the fire, numerous businesses and developers had contacted him with offers of support.
"It was happening literally within minutes," he said. "These things can really pull a community together."
Volunteers with the hatchery had long dreamed of having a specialized education centre, something that could be incorporated into the design of the new facility. The location of the building could also be reconsidered, he said, noting it might function better if it was closer to Ioco Road.
On Wednesday night, fire tore through the Mossom Creek Hatchery building, taking 37 years of records, photographs, press clippings with it.
Port Moody Fire Chief Remo Faedo said icy road conditions leading up to the hatchery meant that firefighters could not get their engine on the property.
After the first engine got stuck, crews began the time-consuming task of carrying 850 m of hose up to the facility to fight the fire.
"We eventually got there, but the building was fully involved," Faedo said.
The cause of the blaze is still under investigation.
