Port Moody's Old Mill Boathouse celebrates 10th anniversary

Members of the Old Mill Boathouse Society will be celebrating the 10th year anniversary of the construction of their facility at Rocky Point Park during an open house next week.

Members of the Old Mill Boathouse Society will be celebrating the 10th year anniversary of the construction of their facility at Rocky Point Park during an open house next week.

The building, which is home to eight member clubs, including the Port Moody Canoe and Kayak Club, the Nothin' Dragon Boaters and the Abreast In A Boat dragon boat club has been a fixture among local sailors and boaters for the last decade, said society president Gordon Clay.

"We have been working on this since 1971," he said "It really didn't begin in earnest until the 1980s. Then it took us another 20 years to get it."

Clay said the building features 100-year-old roof trusses, which were salvaged from the old saw sharpening building at Flavelle Cedar when it was demolished in 1995.

A large banquet hall is located upstairs and holds weddings, business meetings and birthday celebrations, proceeds of which funds the society's operations.

The open house will take place at the Old Mill Boathouse (2715 Esplanade Street adjacent to Rocky Point Park in Port Moody) on Aug. 26, between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

There will be displays, refreshments, videos of the activities of various member clubs. All members of the public are welcome.
