The third-annual charity hockey match between Powell River RCMP and Powell River Fire Rescue on April 6 at Hap Parker Arena saw over 800 people in attendance and raised over $16,000 in funds.
This time around it was the firefighters who took the lead and won 5-2 against the RCMP. Funds raised will be split between Powell River Professional Firefighters Charitable Society and Cops for Cancer Tour de Coast.
"The game was very well played on both sides," said firefighter Sid Allman. "It was a great game to watch, as well as having [two former Vancouver Canucks’ players] Dave Babych and Doug Bodger play well for the teams."
Allman gave accolades to what he said was a fun crowd that showed tremendous support for the event. He said both teams are already looking forward to next year's game.
Last year, the RCMP won the charity hockey game against the firefighters. The funds raised in 2023 went to Cops for Cancer Tour de Coast, which corporal Philippe Caza, from the local RCMP detachment, has participated in since 2021.
