Problems with concrete tendering process delays Coquitlam's dry floor facility

Completion of a $3.9-million dry-floor sports facility in Coquitlam is expected to be delayed until mid-December because of issues related to the concrete flooring contractor.

Completion of a $3.9-million dry-floor sports facility in Coquitlam is expected to be delayed until mid-December because of issues related to the concrete flooring contractor.

A company was selected to do the work in June but, during a final review, staff said it became clear that the contractor would not be able to guarantee the high-quality playing surface the city was looking for. As a result, the company's bid was dismissed and the contract was re-tendered, delaying the construction process by one to two months.

"We have never built a structure like this," said Perry Staniscia, the city's general manager of strategic initiatives. "This is a first of the city. We are proceeding with caution."

He added that the project remains on budget despite the delays.

When it is completed, the 25,000 sq. ft. facility, located near Poirier Street and Winslow Avenue, next to Dogwood Pavilion, will be used for ball hockey, lacrosse, dry-land training and indoor soccer, among other sports.
