Public input sought for Maple Creek plan

Tri-City residents and businesses are invited to comment on the future of Maple Creek at an upcoming open house this month.

Tri-City residents and businesses are invited to comment on the future of Maple Creek at an upcoming open house this month.

The 192-hectare watershed, which flows through Port Coquitlam and Coquitlam, runs mainly through developed housing and commercial areas.

A draft plan will be presented to the public at the open house, outlining what the cities intend to do to mitigate flooding on private property and enhance habitat. The document also identifies several affordable enhancement projects for the riparian corridor.

"We've been working cooperatively with the city of Coquitlam, Kwikwetlem First Nation and other stakeholders to enhance this important natural feature in both of our communities," said Mayor Greg Moore. "This is the public's chance to add their voice as we work towards more sustainable management of Maple Creek."

Those who attend the open house will have the opportunity to view display boards and speak directly to consultants, city staff and councillors. Members of the projects steering committee, which include representatives from Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Kwikwetlem First Nation, Maple Creek Streamkeepers, Ministry of Environment and Metro Vancouver, will also be present.

The event takes place on April 19 between 6 and 9 p.m. at the Leigh Square Community Arts Village (2100-2253 Leigh Sq.). Public feedback on the draft Maple Creek Integrated Watershed Plan will be collected until May 10 and the final report is expected in July.
