Pulling weeds draws a crowd in Coquitlam

Twenty trees were saved from the grips of ivy
Invasive species
Dozens of young people turn out to pull invasive species in Coquitlam River Park.

A whopping 37 volunteers turned out to the Coquitlam River Park invasive species removal event organized by the Lower Mainland Green Team and there are more environmental clean up opportunities to come.

The event was a success, according to event organizer Lyda Salatian, as 20 trees were saved from the grips of ivy and 25 cubic meters of English Ivy and periwinkle were removed from 250 square metres of park land.

Among the group, 27 volunteers had never been to Coquitlam River Park before, 15 volunteers had never removed invasive plants before and two volunteers rode their bikes to the park on Pipeline Road.
Volunteers who came out were from the Tri-Cities as well as Burnaby, New Westminster, North Vancouver and Vancouver.

Two more invasive plant removal events are planned, one in Port Moody along the Shoreline Trail on Sunday, Nov. 18 and another at Coquitlam River Park on Saturday, Nov. 24.

Along with ridding the parks of invasive species, volunteers meet others with similar interests and get free gifts as well as volunteer hours if they need them for high school.
