Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIOBC) is examining a sudden death incident that occurred in Burnaby involving members of the Coquitlam RCMP.
According to a press release, Mounties received reports early last Wednesday morning that a man left his home and intended to harm himself. Police had information that he may be at Burnaby Lake Regional Park.
By 2:30 p.m., Coquitlam Mounties had located the man they believed they were looking for and he had a firearm.
“Police engaged the man verbally, at which point the man shot himself,” IIOBC stated in a press release Wednesday. “The scene has been cordoned off as part of the investigation.”
IIOBC was contacted and is now investigating the officers’ handling of the situation to see if “there is any link between police action or inaction and the death of the male.”
According to its website, the civilian-led IIOBC is “responsible for conducting investigations into all officer-related incidents that result in death or serious harm.”
