Tri-City residents can now drop off more recyclables - for free - at Wastech in Coquitlam.
Starting this week, Wastech is allowing local people to recycle a host of new items, including electronic waste (computers, cell phones, home speakers, etc.), small appliances, cooking oils, batteries, light bulbs, Styrofoam, paint cans, paint, pesticides, solvents and gasoline.
The aim of the expanded program is to keep the products out of the landfill. (Wastech is owned by Belkorp Environmental Services Inc., which operates the Cache Creek landfill.)
"Recycling is free so users can access the new area without having to wait with the paying users that have to go over the scales to access the disposal facility. This means no waiting in line with commercial trucks for people who choose to recycle," said Wastech general manager Janet Tecklenborg, in a news release.
Still, she urges residents to first try to find a new use for their old goods before recycling them.
