A proposal that the city require wildlife-resistant garbage containers for commercial properties failed to make the grade for Moody council.

Staff had crafted the policy, which would have required all commercial properties to secure food sources or garbage to prevent wildlife from accessing it, in response to a request made in January by the committee of the whole.

Council members balked at the $3,000 public education cost as well as an additional $5,000 annually for bylaw enforcement.

Mayor Mike Clay said the policy veered into "nanny state" territory and was unnecessary given the extensive public education that has already taken place through PoMo's Bear Aware program.
