A second Coquitlam city councillor was formally granted a leave of absence this week to run in the upcoming provincial election.

On Monday, council approved Coun. Selina Robinson's request to take a leave from her civic duties from April 16 to May 15 to campaign for the NDP in Coquitlam-Maillardville - a riding currently held by former Coquitlam city councillor and NDP MLA Diane Thorne, who is retiring.

Robinson was acclaimed as the constituency's candidate last November.

Robinson's leave from her municipal job is without pay and will save city taxpayers about $5,765 for the period, said Ron Price, Coquitlam's manager of human resources.

Last month, city council granted the same leave to Coun. Linda Reimer, who is running for the BC Liberals in Port Moody-Coquitlam, the riding currently held by NDP MLA Joe Trasolini.

The provincial election is May 14.
