Rocky Point Ice Cream is closing its canteen.

But owners Jaimie and Yvette Cuthbert say the closure after this weekend is only temporary while they reflect on how to transform the space through the winter months.

In a post on Instagram, the Cuthberts said The Canteen, a sandwich shop and café that opened in 2021 in the front of their new 7,500 sq. ft. ice cream production facility on Murray Street, has been a “labour of love,” but economic challenges are making it tough to keep it going.

“We’ve always believed in uncompromising quality and the rising costs have made it challenging to sustain this commitment.”

The Cuthberts have been pleasing ice cream lovers for years at their popular little shop in Rocky Point Park, as well as satellite concessions at Stanley Park, the Capilano Suspension Bridge and Town Centre Park in Coquitlam, a location in New Westminster and a couple of food trucks.

The new plant allows them to make more ice cream and keep a tighter rein on quality along the way.

But branching out into sandwiches and warm beverages hasn’t been easy, said the Cuthberts in their post.

“The economic landscape has evolved.”

The ice cream business isn’t affected by The Canteen’s closure and the couple said it won’t remain fallow for long.

“We look forward to sharing an even more exciting and delicious future… when we reopen in the spring,” they said, adding updates will be posted on The Canteen’s social media channels.
