At a press conference yesterday at Rocky Point Park in Port Moody, NDP leader Thomas Mulcair and New Westminster-Coquitlam-Port Moody MP Fin Donnelly launched an attack against the Senate.
Mulcair stated it's undemocratic to appoint senators to longtime sinecures when they are unable to win voters' support.
He noted the example of Senator Yonah Martin, was appointed after her failed bid to win the riding of New Westminster-Coquitlam in 2008 for the Tories, calling the appointment a "slap in the face" to Canadian voters.
"These are candidates rejected by the people and yet Stephen Harper decided to override the wishes of Canadians and appoint them to the Senate anyway," said Mulcair.
If elected, he said, the NDP would abolish the senate.
The senate has been under fire in recent months over expenses.
