Drivers are being advised to steer clear of the south end of Pitt River Road Monday afternoon after a natural gas line ruptured.

FortisBC said the Port Coquitlam street is closed in both directions between the Mary Hill bypass and Citadel Drive to repair the damage; the work is expected to be complete by 2:15 p.m.

PoCo firefighters and RCMP were called to the scene, and no evacuation orders were made.

FortisBC spokesperson Diana Sorace said the line was hit at around 12:20 p.m. by a contractor handling drainage work at an area townhouse development.

She encouraged contractors and homeowners to contact BC One Call (a free service that provides the location of underground utilities) before digging.
