School District 43 gets an A for its enrolment projections this year - with the result that its budget revenue projections should be on target.

Enrolment is holding steady at about 30,100 students, according to a head count that took place Oct. 17 and was presented to the board of education Tuesday night.

"The budget was based on the February enrolment and the numbers came in close to our February projections," assistant superintendent Carey Chute told The Tri-City News.

In February, the district predicted that kindergarten to Grade 12 enrolment would be 30,095 and the numbers came in at 30,100.

Unlike some districts, SD43 isn't seeing any noticeable decline in enrolment, with numbers holding steady compared to last year, losing the equivalent of about five students over the 12 months.

But those numbers typically fluctuate over the year, Chute said, and overall, the district gets more students moving in to the area than it loses.

Ensuring that enrolment is accurate is key to district finances because provincial funding is largely based on per-pupil funding. In 2012, the district numbers were off by about 200 students, which hurt its bottom line and contribute to its $8-million deficit deficit that year.
