SD43 students get progress reports this month

Schools are getting back to normal with staff meetings, supervision and report cards, says the superintendent of School District 43, but some issues may still have to be worked out.

Students will be getting progress report cards at the end of the month, confirmed superintendent Tom Grant Tuesday, but they won't be standardized. Parents can expect to see a mix of marks or a meeting expectations check list and anecdotal remarks for the younger grades and regular report cards with marks for high school students.

As well, all students will be receiving a final report card at the end of the year.

However, the report cards won't be backdated to the beginning of the year, when teachers took legal job action to back contract demands. However, for Grades 10 to 12 students marks from the previous semester have been archived and will be sent to the province for recording.

"We're in a pretty good place going forward," Grant said, "We're coming together a lot quicker than most (districts," he added.

However, there may be some adjustments that have to be made as administrators and teachers begin working together again. "People will attend staff meetings," Grand said. "It doesn't mean they'll engage."

Bill 22 was passed in March, which ended job action for teachers and implemented a number of class size and composition regulation changes and a mediator has been appointed to deal with outstanding bargaining issues.
