Coquitlam Search and Rescue is searching for a Douglas College student who went missing yesterday afternoon at White Pine Beach.

Joy Zhang, a special needs student, joined a group of nine others at the park to celebrate the end of the 12-month consumer and job preparation program.

Two people had initially gone missing but search crews said that one of the women had been found late Thursday night.

"Our thoughts and hopes are with the missing student and her parents," said Douglas College president Scott McAlpine. "Her parents are extremely concerned, as are we. We know that the police and searchers are doing an excellent job and doing everything possible. We were thrilled last night when we heard that one of the women was found, and we hope the second one will be found safe very soon."

The pair were discovered missing at around 1 p.m. and organizers of the picnic contacted park rangers who helped search the area.

The Port Moody Police were called around 4 p.m. and search and rescue crews moved into the area a short time later.

One of the missing women was found at around 11 p.m. but the search continued through the night for Zhang.
