Most Port Coquitlam residents are accustomed to separating their garbage from recyclables and compost when they are at home and now they can do so when out in their community.
The city has purchased more than 50 waste-sorting bins that provide individual containers for food scraps, recyclables and garbage. The bins have been installed in public places throughout the city, including parks, shopping areas, bus stops and in front of schools and businesses.
"This builds on the great work that our city and our residents have been doing to keep waste away from the dump," Mayor Greg Moore said in a press release. "We encourage people to sort their waste at home, so it makes sense to offer opportunities to do the same thing everywhere in the community."
The new bins provide clear information and graphics to show what goes into each slot. A food scrap bin takes everything from bones and soiled paper to napkins and pizza boxes while the recycle bin is for plastic bottles and lids, disposable cups and metal cans. The waste bin is for everything else, including styrofoam, foil, diapers and other plastics.
The cost of the bins is being offset by advertising, managed by EcoMedia Direct.
