Coquitlam RCMP are investigating reports of shots fired late Sunday night in the Dewdney Trunk Road area.
Police were called just before 9 p.m. but did not find a victim.
"There was no one around in distress so we're making inquiries to try and find out who heard it," said Const. Jen Goodings.
Officers found a rifle in the alley nearby and are investigating who the owner might be and whether it was recently fired.
