The IKEA in Coquitlam was evacuated Saturday evening after staff and shoppers noticed a mysterious haze wafting throughout the building.

Coquitlam fire chief Tony Delmonico said the incident, which occurred shortly after 5 p.m., was not serious and that a fire alarm was pulled out of an abundance of caution.

"You never know with those types of things," he said. "Out of precaution we evacuated the building. You are better safe than sorry."

Firefighters and IKEA maintenance personnel scoured the building for the source of the haze but found nothing.

After an hour and a half, employees and customers were allowed to re-enter the store.

"Fire crews checked all aspects of the building," he said. "They could determine it was probably an issue with the air handling system."
