Parents are encouraged to listen to radio stations and check the School District 43 website regularly for information about busing and possible school closures as Environment Canada is predicting a snowfall warning for tonight.
District spokesperson Cheryl Quinton said the aim is to have information out by 7 a.m. so people can plan their day.
"Based on all that info and studying the weather reports, we make a decision by 7 a.m. that's our commitment to the public," Quinton said.
Schools were kept open Tuesday morning after early indications were that the roads were passable and Quinton was urging parents to inform themselves of possible closures Wednesday.
"We won't be making an absolute decision until early morning hours," Quinton said, advising parents to check www.sd43.bc.ca regularly or listen to CKNW and CKWX for possible school closures. If there are school closures, they will be announced on the radio stations and on a banner on the district website.
This morning's snowfall, which clogged major routes and led to accidents throughout the region, including one at North Road and Como Lake Avenue, slowed school buses in neighbourhoods at higher elevations and the district suggested parents consider keeping their kids home for the day if they felt they couldn't get to school safely.
Quinton said the decision was made to keep schools open based on road and weather reports available before 7 a.m. But later in the morning, when the snow started falling more heavily in some areas, the situation worsened but by then the announcement had already gone out to keep schools open.
"It's a very difficult science, you're sort of darned if you do and darned if you don't, it's just just based on all the variables based on the information that you have."
