Staff shake-up at PoCo city hall

Two new staffers have been hired at Port Coquitlam city hall, filling positions that have been left vacant for months.

Two new staffers have been hired at Port Coquitlam city hall, filling positions that have been left vacant for months.

Andrew Wood is the city's new director of engineering and operations, replacing Igor Zahynacz, who now works for the city as a consultant. Wood is the first department head in PoCo's history to have a PhD and has taught and contributed to engineering course development at the University of BC.

Jackie Gorton has taken over as the city's chief financial officer, replacing Jim Maitland, who left the city in 2010. Gorton is a chartered accountant, a certified internal auditor and has her masters in business administration. She has previously worked for the Oppenheimer Group, the Overwaitea Group and several other Lower Mainland municipalities.

DEVELOPMENT

Port Coquitlam council is considering rezoning a piece of property at Shaughnessy Street and Prairie Avenue to allow for a 17-unit townhouse development.

But several councillors expressed concern about access points to the property and said more work would have to be done on the proposal as it moves through the rezoning process. Council voted unanimously in favour of the report and the application will come back for four more readings at council before the development can be approved.

Another development working its way through the city's application process is a 60-unit apartment building on Suffolk Avenue. If it passes all four readings, the four-storey structure will be built over four lots between 2016 and 2040 Suffolk.
