Stay away from the Cape Horn interchange this weekend

Motorists are being advised to avoid the Cape Horn Interchange and the Port Mann bridge this weekend as crews work to put the final piece of a new overpass connecting the Lougheed Highway with Highway 1 eastbound into place.

The work is expected to be completed in time for the Monday morning commute but between Saturday night and Sunday afternoon Highway 1 westbound will be reduced to one lane. Intermittent lane closures are also expected throughout the weekend.

Highway 1 will also be reduced to one lane in each direction between Sept. 28 and 30, when demolition crews take down the old Cape Horn overpass.

Transportation Investment Corporation spokesperson Greg Johnson said in a press release that advertising, social media and highway signage will alert drivers to the closure on those weekend and advise them to find alternate routes.

The project is one of the most comprehensive interchange reconstruction in B.C. history, and the most complex part of the Port Mann/Highway 1 Improvement Project.

Johnson said when work is complete, the new interchange will have 15 new ramps, structures and direct connections, which will be a critical part of the bridge's travel time savings.
