Still time to help families in need

While the coming weekend may be busy with frantic last-minute preparations for Christmas celebrations, there’s still an opportunity to help those whose season may not be quite as bountiful.

Real Canadian Superstores, No Frills and Your Independent Grocer in Coquitlam will be collecting non-perishable food items in special bins set up near store entrances and customer service kiosks right up until Christmas eve.

The items, as well as monetary donations, will go to Share Family and Community Services for its annual holiday food drive.

“We know that sometimes there’s a big difference between dinner at our own house and what’s on the table just down the street,” said Rob Holt, the manager of Real Canadian Superstore on Lougheed Highway.

Laura Lansink, the executive director of Food Banks BC, said donations in the days and weeks leading up to Christmas can reverberate through the coming months.

“This is a critical time of year to reach out for donations,” she said. “The generosity inspired by the holiday season can significantly help to stock our shelves.”

The need is especially great for hearty, healthy food items, and every dollar that’s donated results in three full, nutritious meals, she said.

Real Canadian Superstores are located at 1301 Lougheed Hwy., and 3000 Lougheed Hwy.
