Suspect in Port Moody assault, carjacking identified, facing multiple charges

A Coquitlam man accused of assaulting a Heritage Mountain homeowner and then carjacking a woman's vehicle to evade police on Tuesday has now been charged with sexual assault and break and enter.

A Coquitlam man accused of assaulting a Heritage Mountain homeowner and then carjacking a woman's vehicle to evade police on Tuesday has now been charged with sexual assault and break and enter.

And in a shocking twist, Port Moody Police report the suspect's crime spree allegedly started with the sexual assault of two women out walking in Aspenwood Park early Monday morning.

Shortly after midnight on Dec. 15 two women were walking on the trails in the park near the Heritage Mountain community hall when a man asked them for directions. After a brief conversation the women began to walk away.

The man allegedly attacked the women from behind, knocking one to the ground, then produced a knife as the women struggled to fight him off.

The suspect stole a purse from one of the women, which contained her keys and identification, and fled the area.

The two women received minor injuries during the struggle.

At about 8:10 a.m. on Tuesday morning, a man went to the victim's house on Birchwood Crescent brandishing a firearm, according to the PMPD. A fight ensued between the suspect and homeowner, who was able to fend off the attack.

The homeowner suffered minor injuries in the struggle and was treated in hospital.

Police believe it is possible the suspect used the stolen identification to target the victim's home.

When police arrived at the Birchwood Crescent house they recovered the firearm and began searching for the suspect. Exits heading down off of Heritage Mountain were restricted as police searched through vehicles and six schools in the area were placed on a Code Yellow lockdown while officers and K9 units searched for the suspect.

During the search, Coquitlam RCMP received a report of an assault and carjacking near a parking lot on Eagle Mountain.

It was also determined the suspect had allegedly sexually assaulted the woman prior to stealing her car; she was also treated in hospital for her injuries.

The suspect matched the description from the PoMo assault and a few minutes later police located the stolen vehicle as it was traveling on Panorama Drive.

After a brief pursuit the vehicle was stopped in the area of Hawthorn Drive.

The driver was arrested and held in custody.

Vahidreza Bordbar, a 31-year-old Coquitlam resident, is facing the following charges: one count of break-and-enter with intent to commit an indictable offence; possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition; and two counts of sexual assault with a weapon.

Bordbar remains in custody and as the investigation continues additional charges may be sought.
