School District 43 is advising parents to keep their students home from school tomorrow, Friday, and Monday, as teacher walkouts continue, and the 2013/'14 school year is finished possibly for the rest of the school year.
This morning the BC Teachers' Federation issued 72 hour strike notice, which takes effect Tuesday, and announced that teachers would also attend study sessions and not be in class Monday.
The escalation comes as students hand in year-end projects and prepare for finals, but Superintendent Tom Grant said only provincial exams have been declared essential. Teachers are also required to hand in Grade 12 marks by June 20, but no other grade marks are required under the ruling.
Grant said that could mean that marks for K to 11 students might not be available, but he said, most students know where they stand and will know if they passed or not.
Students are also advised to clear out their lockers and hand in any outstanding work today, if possible.
Parents will be advised of complications arising from the work-stoppage via email after today, Grant said. The district's website will also be updated as news is available.
According to a spokesperson from the Ministry of Education, bargaining between the BC Public School Employers' Association is ongoing.
