Teens warned to stay away from Project X party

Mounties are sending a clear message to teens planning to attend a so-called "Project X" party in Coquitlam on Friday: Expect police to be at the event, too.

RCMP say they learned this week about the party, which is inspired by a movie about three high school seniors who throw a birthday bash to make a name for themselves.

Coquitlam RCMP Cpl. Jamie Chung said some 1,000 invitations were sent out via social media for an Aug. 31 party at a home in the Como Lake Village area; attendees are asked to meet at the Lougheed SkyTrain station before heading to Coquitlam Centre and, later, the party.

Chung said police will make their presence known.

"We are well aware of the 'Project X' party trend and we know from watching what's happened in other jurisdictions that if these parties happen, they get out of control very fast," Chung said."Anyone planning to throw one of these events or go to one in our area should know that we are doing everything we can to be the ultimate party-poopers."
