Port Moody residents and business owners can voice their thoughts about the city’s proposed 5.55% tax increase for the coming year at a town hall meeting on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Inlet Theatre in city hall (100 Newport Dr.).

They can also complete an online survey or submit a paper one that’s available at city hall.

The proposed tax increase is down from earlier estimates of more than 7% after city council’s finance committee excised several items from the 2019 budget, including a street performers program and new heron ecosculptures, as well as the Shoreline Shuttle bus service. Those cuts amounted to about $330,000, bringing the net estimated tax increase to$2.26 million, or about $124 a year for the average household in the city.

The increase also includes a proposed 1% asset levy to help replace existing infrastructure in the city. That levy was deferred last year.

In total, the city expects to collect more than $43.3 million in property taxes in 2019.

More information about Port Moody’s 2019-’23 draft financial plan, as well as a link to the online survey, is available at www.portmoody.ca/budget.

The town hall meeting will also be live-streamed on the city’s website.
