The apocalypse comes to Port Coquitlam this week – plan your commute accordingly

The TV series Radio Nowhere, based on the Stephen King novel The Stand, will be filming in Port Coquitlam's Leigh Square
Apocalypse isn't coming to Port Coquitlam
No the apocalypse isn't coming to Port Coquitlam — but a movie about a post-apocalyptic world is being filmed in the city.

Port Coquitlam’s quaint downtown is being turned into an apocalyptic hellscape where 99% of the population has been killed by a virus.

And drivers heading downtown Friday should be aware that traffic control may be in place during the day to allow for filming of the CBS series Radio Nowhere.

In a tweet Wednesday, the city of Port Coquitlam explained there will be a lot of activity at Leigh Square, the arts village next to city hall, over the next few days in advance of filming Feb. 21.

The production is based on Stephen King’s bestselling novel The Stand and boasts some major stars, including Whoopi Goldberg, Greg Kinnear, James Marsden, Alexander Skarsgard and Amber Heard.

According to, The Stand is about a deadly flu that wipes out most of the world’s population. The survivors must choose between following one of two people and “the two factions prepare for a confrontation between the forces of good and evil.”

IMDb says the 10-episode series is set to air in 2020

The isn’t the first time filming of Radio Nowhere affected traffic.

In Vancouver, residents were warned of “highly-visible” graphic content being filmed in Gastown, which included mock dead bodies, and in Delta, the production wanted to shut down a portion of Highway 17A, but failed to get the green light.

It’s not known how graphic the filming will be when the shoot gets underway in Port Coquitlam.

Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam and Port Moody have been generating revenue from hosting movie and TV production companies.

In Coquitlam, for example, the municipality collected $171,000 last year from 186 permits issued to film scenes for such television series as: Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, The InBetween, Batwoman, Love It or List It, Nancy Drew, Omen and Supernatural.
