The Terry Fox Hometown Run is Sunday in Port Coquitlam. Here's what you need to know

The 44th annual Terry Fox Hometown Run is taking place Sunday, Sept. 15, in Port Coquitlam.

Here’s what you need to know:

The run

The run starts and finishes at the Hyde Creek Recreation Centre (1379 Laurier Ave.).

The course includes distances of 2-, 6- and 8-km and participants can run, walk, roll, stroll, roller blade, skip or move any which way they choose.

The starting gun goes off at 10 a.m. but on-site registration tables open at 8 a.m. You can also register online in advance.

The fun

Entertainment on the main stage will be provided by Cakewalk.

Special guests include cancer survivor Erin Danielle Ness and Port Coquitlam Mayor Brad West. Radio personality Drew Savage, of The Nat & Drew Show on MOVE 103.5 will be the day’s master of ceremonies and Brad Lovell will sing “Never Give Up on a Dream,” a song written by Rod Stewart to honour Fox.

If you want to wear a limited edition 44th anniversary Terry Fox Run t-shirt that was designed by Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds, they’re available until 2 p.m. today, Sept. 13, or while supplies last, at:

  • the main desk of the Hyde Creek Rec Centre
  • the main desk at the Port Coquitlam Community Centre (2150 Wilson Ave.)
  • Patina Brewing (2332 Marpole Ave.)
  • Save-On-Foods (2385 Ottawa St. And 1430 Prairie Ave.)

T-shirts, buttons and books from past events will be for sale at Sunday’s run.

The cause

All funds raised go to the Terry Fox Foundation to help further research into finding cures for various cancers.

Last year’s hometown run raised more than $140,000 online and a smaller run in Coquitlam as well as a virtual effort in Port Moody contributed another $10,000.

The closures

To accommodate the run, several roads in Port Coquitlam will be closed and others will have parking restrictions.

The closures include:

  • From 6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
    • the 1300-clock for Laurier from the Hyde Creek Rec Centre to Coast Meridian Road
  • From 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
    • north and southbound Coast Meridian Road from Laurier Avenue to Kingsway Avenue, including the Coast Meridian overpass
    • the Coast Meridian Connector north of Tim Horton’s
    • 2100-1700 block of Kingsway Avenue between Wilson and Broadway avenues
    • 2100-block of Kelly Avenue from Mary Hill Road to Kingsway

Parking restrictions will be in place on:

  • both sides of Kingsway Avenue between Wilson and Broadway avenues
  • both sides of the 1300-block of Laurier Avenue

Local residents who live along the affected routes will still have access to their homes, but they may be asked to provide identification at checkpoints.

Several bus routes will also be impacted by the run, including:

  • 172 Riverside
  • 172 Coquitlam Central
  • 173 Cedar
  • 173 Coquitlam Central
  • 188 PoCo Station
  • 188 Coquitlam Central
